The following are some of the software and features you can expect to find in your Debian Desktop/Laptop Computers. Over 18,000+ precompiled software bundles are available through downloading from the Debian repository. For more, please read our Recommended Software List.

These software are provided at no charge, as it is our goal to pass on the savings and spread the popularity of FLOSS. Read more in Benefit and Costs of owning a preloaded Debian computer package.

Interested users may note that Debian distributions are downloadable from www.debian.org and our custom modifications are available in Downloads Section at gratis. We provide this information in the spirit of Free software so that users may help themselves and their neighbours.

    1. Openoffice
      • Calc - a spreadsheet application.
      • Draw - a graphic program.
      • Write - a word processor program.
      • Impress - a presentation generator.
      • Math - a formula composer for ...math what else.
    2. AbiWord - a native word processor.
    3. gnumeric - a spreadsheet application.
    4. Planner - a project management application.
    5. GnuCash - a financial management program for personal or small businesses.
    6. Evolution - a email reader, calendar, contact, memo and tasks management application. With GNOME Spell - a GNOME/Bonobo component for spell checking. It's based on aspell.

    1. Dia Diagram Editor - a Vector diagram editor.
    2. Gimp - a bitmap graphics editor.
    3. Inkscape SVG Vector Illustrator - a vector base drawing program.
    4. Camorama - a webcam capture program. click, click, click - moon planet earth.
    5. Xsane is a graphical frontend to SANE image scanner software.

  3. Multimedia Software

    1. Rhythmbox is an integrated music management application. Listen to Internet radio stations, podcasts or your CDs. You can also sync to your iPod and then listen later.

  4. Internet Software

    1. Iceweasel - Community version of Firefox, next generation Internet Browser from Mozilla. Plugins required for Flash©*, PDF**.
    2. Gaim - a multi-protocol instant messaging (IM) client
    3. gFTP - a ftp client.
    4. Putty - a SSH client useful for logging into school remotely to do assignments on school computers. e.g. programming, SAS, etc.
    5. GnomeMeeting or Ekiga -Ekiga (formerly known as GnomeMeeting) is an open source VoIP and video conferencing application for GNOME. Ekiga uses both the H.323 and SIP protocols. It supports many audio and video codecs, and is interoperable with other SIP compliant software and also with Microsoft NetMeeting.
    6. Evolution or Sylpheed Claws - An excellent Email client with spam filter feature.
    7. SpamAssassin - Spam filter software.
    8. Mail Notification monitors multiple mailboxes for new mail.

  5. Game Software

    1. eboard - a chess interface providing a chess board interface to ICS (Internet Chess Servers) like FICS and to chess engines like GNU Chess, Sjeng and Crafty. Lose to the computer or get beat up by little Russian girls over the Internet - your choice!
    2. GNOME games- a collection of games for the GNOME desktop. There are sixteen games including card games, puzzle games, and arcade games. These games are designed to be simple but addictive - five minute games for when you need a break.

  6. Programming Tools

    Only the standard tools are installed initially; after all, not everyone is a programmer - installing so much would take up disk space and intimidate the novice. But Linux systems are open systems and is known for its huge selection of accessible quality tools. Read Recommended Software for more.

    1. Programming Environment or Languages.
      This is only some of the many programming language available. Ideal for any computer science student.
      1. gcc - for C programming or C++ programming.
      2. Perl -a multi purpose interpreted programming language.
    2. Other programming tools such as version control -CVS, web-server - Apache, Databases with commitment control like PostgreSQL are available for download. We don't load these because they take up disk space and not everyone needs them.

  7. System

    1. Desktop
      1. GNOME - this is the default desktop in Debian Etch and is customized by us. See Support Centre for more details.
      2. KDE- for those die-hard kde fans, this is the alternative.
      3. Xorg - the GUI Gnome or KDE is build on.
    2. Kernel
      1. Debian Etch with custom kernel version 2.6.XX or above to take advantage of the special hardware that came with your computer. e.g. CPU support, gigabit network driver, SATA driver, etc.
      2. Software Suspend2 compiled in.
      3. Bootsplash compiled in.
      4. GSPCA / SPCA5xx - webcam drivers compiled into debian package from source with the custom kernel.
      5. Ndiswrapper - Wireless interface for using wireless card, wireless pcmcia card or wireless USB. Compiled into debian package from source with the custom kernel.
      6. Tested with SD drive.
    3. User space program.
      1. ClamAV/ Avscan - anti-virus software and its GUI frontend.
      2. Firestarter - A simple to use Linux firewall.
      3. FreeDOS - A DOS emulator.
      4. RevelationRevelation is a password manager. It stores accounts and passwords as AES-encrypted XML.
      5. Mondo Rescue - disk backup utility for disaster recovery.
      6. Ipw3945 wireless a/b/g driver for ASUS Laptop or ndiswrapper for ASUS Desktops.
      7. 915resolution for 1280x800 non-native resolution on ASUS Laptops only.
      8. Seahorse is a front end for the Gnu Privacy Guard program. It is a tool for data encryption and digital signing.
      9. acpid for accessing responding to hardware events.
      10. Hotkeys for accessing special keys.
      11. Laptop-mode for extending your ASUS Laptop battery life only.
      12. Powersaved - to enable power saving in AMD base Computers. Save energy cost, decrease heat in chassis and helps you be "Green".
      13. Initramfs-tools with Grub for booting with PATA/SATA/SCSI drive.
