- Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) is a shared library API such that desktop applications can locate and use hardware devices.
- UDEV is the new standard allowing Linux users to have a dynamic /dev directory and it provides the ability to have persistent device names. Unlike older devfs, it works entirely in userspace.
